Awww, Hail, Nawww … Not Will Smith
Posted by Dirty Harry on Monday, June 23rd, 2008
Will Smith must get his talking points from Michelle Obama:
You know I just, I just came back from Moscow, Berlin, London and Paris and it’s the first, I’ve been there quite a few times in the past five to 10 years. And it just hasn’t been a good thing to be American. And this is the first time, since Barack has gotten the nomination, that it, it was a good thing.
The number of ways in which that statement is wrong are too obvious and too many to count. Let me leave it with this: Please, Will, stop. Please. Stop.
[thanks to Photoman for the heads up]

HARRY HERE: Just a heads up that I plagarized this comment for the post title.
mjkon 23 Jun 2008 at 12:55 pm 2Oh Good Lord.
I just got back from Europe and I was with a bunch of Americans and Israelis. It was fine. No one anti-American’d us or whatever. They were actually quite lovely.
In conclusion, the Democratic Messiah is not the reason why people are nice to each other. People are nice to each other because it’s the decent thing to do.
Christianon 23 Jun 2008 at 12:57 pm 3Sh*t! I really like him.
Christianon 23 Jun 2008 at 12:58 pm 4or at least I did…
gzirraon 23 Jun 2008 at 1:03 pm 5Yet another example proving liberals are eternal adolescents. They’re more concerned with what others think of them than they are with doing the right thing.
Mighty Skipon 23 Jun 2008 at 1:10 pm 6Eh, I was expecting this sooner or later out of any famous to near famous so-called-minority. Oddly he plays it rather smart. It might be subtle enough to get it past people who aren’t paying attention or care about politics much.
He doesn’t go out and say Obama is a great man, or make some other statement of deification that we’ve seen from others. He just sort of throws it out there; he doesn’t claim anyone is saying, “Hey! I used to hate Americans but now Obama has the nomination you are all wonderful!! WEEEEEE!” Instead he makes an off-hand remark that cannot possibly be proven or disputed. “I’m not saying anything but people there are suddenly much friendlier now that Obama is nominated. I’m not saying anything but remember that in the voting booth, if you want America’s reputation fixed.” *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge*
Carlitoson 23 Jun 2008 at 1:12 pm 7>>>”Will Smith must get his talking points from Michelle Obama”
Well, as a black man, you know, Will Smith can get shot going to the gas station.
Templaron 23 Jun 2008 at 1:14 pm 8Just a heads up that I plagarized this comment for the post title.
Heh, I was surprised I managed to get that one in first.
Kensingtonon 23 Jun 2008 at 1:24 pm 9I remember listening to an Alec Baldwin rant one time. He was in hysterics, shrieking about how the rest of the world was laughing at us.
I remember thinking, “so what?” Why didn’t his mother and father teach him that getting laughed at isn’t the end of the world?
He didn’t know that.
JimmyCon 23 Jun 2008 at 1:34 pm 10In Eddie Izzard’s stand-up show, “Dress to Kill,” he comments on how it can be tough for Americans to travel abroad because of our foreign policy.
Guess when “Dress to Kill” came out? 1999, during the reign of the last democratic Messiah, Bill Clinton.
The fact is, some foreigners are going to dislike us regardless of our foreign policy. And sucking up to them won’t change anything. Got it, Fresh Prince?
Thomas Vieweron 23 Jun 2008 at 1:37 pm 11He’s one of them. I’m surprised you didn’t know that. “They” don’t like us, ergo, we must be doing something wrong. The biggest sin is to cause offense. How post-modern! Where the heck does that come from and why does it make any sense? They don’t like us because they can’t BE US!
Still one of my favorite actors, though.
photomanon 23 Jun 2008 at 1:39 pm 12Heh Mighty Skip….
Will makes himself out to be an idiot if watch see the entire clip:
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/geoffrey-dickens/2008/06/23/will-smith-obama-first-time-10-years-it-s-good-be-american
It’s not such an innocent, off-hand comment
Kensingtonon 23 Jun 2008 at 1:48 pm 13Dennis Prager puts it best: the “world” doesn’t hate America; the Left hates America.
Troyon 23 Jun 2008 at 2:03 pm 14Carlitos… they’re not shooting at Will Smith they’re shooting at the cans. Tell him to stay away from the oil cans.
Mighty Skipon 23 Jun 2008 at 2:11 pm 15photoman,
Good point. Ah well, just one more actor when I watch I’m going to have to try to forget statements like this so I can enjoy the art.
Thudon 23 Jun 2008 at 2:32 pm 16Did you really expect anything different?…big willy knows which way the wind is blowing…allegedly.
peteron 23 Jun 2008 at 2:42 pm 17This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone- these people are all so out of touch- their only reality written by a writer to be memorized by themselves.
They’re all robots to be programmed.
steevyon 23 Jun 2008 at 3:14 pm 18Oh well,I knew he would say something along these lines sooner or later. He joins Ryan Reynolds on the old crapper list….
no kiddingon 23 Jun 2008 at 3:31 pm 19In that same interview with Matt Lauer, Will Smith said “there are certain ideas that I believe Barack stands for that are fundamental that the forefathers of this country wrote down on paper that we’re all supposed to pay attention to, we’re not supposed to ignore it and do what we want to do ’cause we have different ideas.” What a tool.
It’d be amusing to learn what Smith thinks is so fundamental, that our forefathers wrote down on paper, that we’re all supposed to pay attention to, and not ignore. Maybe he’s big on federalism, and referring to the neglected Tenth Amendment. Or perhaps it’s the First Amendment, and he’s upset about McCain-Feingold.
steevyon 23 Jun 2008 at 4:01 pm 20Our “forefathers”wanted habeus rights for aliens,no doubt……….
Stephanieon 23 Jun 2008 at 4:04 pm 21I used to like him to. WHat a moron. Funny enough I am writing this while we watch…Independence Day a fun movie but also right up there with stupidest thing ever created………
Will I am disappointed. Not surprised mind you but disappointed. Sometimes its better to say NOTHING AT ALL!
JohnFNWayneon 23 Jun 2008 at 4:08 pm 22… if it’s so bad to go to Europe on a junket as an American, explain to me why Britain, France and others are electing more conservative governments? I’m sure the crowd he runs with hates our guts, but leave the freakin’ cocktail party and take a walk around every once in a while.
Helenon 23 Jun 2008 at 4:55 pm 23Errm, Britain is not electing a more conservative government. In fact, we are not likely to be electing another government till 2010. I think you must have meant Italy.
Mind you, that is a detail. The notion that anti-Americanism, which has been around for about as long as there has been an America and certainly since the Second World War will magically go away because Barack Obama will be the Democratic candidate is pure tosh. Then again, who takes luvvies seriously?
bluehooon 23 Jun 2008 at 5:02 pm 24I don’t get the fuss. It seems he is just commenting on his treatment being better by Europeans after the Obama nomination as opposed to Bush, not that he thinks it’s bad to be an American.
Kiton 23 Jun 2008 at 5:03 pm 25As long as Will Smith produces good movies, I can tolerate that comment.
billypaintbrushon 23 Jun 2008 at 7:33 pm 26wonder what those forefather ideas are, specifically?
what a maroon. what is it with these guys that tey feel the need to insult such a bid share of their potential revenue sources.

Templaron 23 Jun 2008 at 7:39 pm 27I think I speak for everyone in saying that the use of celebrity caricatures to headline items like this needs to become a regular thing.
prisoner105on 23 Jun 2008 at 7:40 pm 28DH are you surprised? Right after 9/11 Smith said he could not feel sorry for the victims because no “Black People” were in the towers which were “symbols of oppression” or words to that effect. Which is both BS (a number of Black people died in the Towers, the Towers were a symbol of commerce not oppression) and monumentally stupid.
That’s Will Smith. He’s always been like that.
Audietooon 23 Jun 2008 at 7:42 pm 29Could the Europeans possibly be wanting the ‘worst’ for us. Or could they just be finally believing Hollywoods forty year anti-American propaganda effort.
Kiton 23 Jun 2008 at 7:43 pm 30Prisoner105,
Please cite your Will Smith statement. I just want to make sure Will Smith said something that stupid before I go telling everyone I know about it.
JohnFNWayneon 23 Jun 2008 at 7:44 pm 31He also believes the government created Aids, Rev. Wright style. The media has covered for him for years.
I think he’s a tremendous talent, a great actor and probably the last true draw left in Hollywood. Still, you can be all these things and dumb as the turd sitting next to the dog house in the backyard.

el gordoon 25 Jun 2008 at 8:02 am 33Will Smith made that statement in an interview with a German newspaper in August 2004. He also said that the United Nations are the future and we can only overcome hunger, war etc. if we unite all countries. Also: George W. Bush lied. I have never heard the original English, but here is the link to the original interview (last question refers to 9/11).
LINK: http://www.faz.net/s/Rub8A25A66CA9514B9892E0074EDE4E5AFA/Doc~ECE5A9F438325465FB855CC633E8091BA~ATpl~Ecommon~Scontent.html
Here is a pretty accurate translation of how Smith answered the question if 9/11 changed anything for him (translation back from German):
http://medienkritik.typepad.com/blog/2004/08/will_smith_in_f.html
“No. Absolutely not. When you grow up black in America you have a completely different view of the world than white Americans. We blacks live with a constant feeling of unease. And whether you are wounded in an attack by a racist cop or in a terrorist attack, I’m sorry, it makes no difference.”
They only translate the first part. He goes on to say roughly this: “In the 1960s blacks were constantly the target of terrorist assaults. It was civic terrorism but terrorism is terrorism. We are used to being attacked. When it comes to living on constant alert, living in a defensive attitude - nothing has changed in that regard.”
You know, I used to consider that perhaps he has a point. Now I´m beginning to think that this attitude is like a comfortable blanket. And coming from a guy who was a millionaire at 18, praises Michael Moore and the UN and says things to the foreign press he wouldn´t say at home - I don´t buy it.
nightflyon 26 Jun 2008 at 12:43 pm 34And, he’s a Phillies fan.
Will Smith is off my Christmas card list.
wtfon 04 Jul 2008 at 5:45 am 35Well, the interview quote cited by el gordo is a pretty far cry from the claims of prisoner105. First, unless Will Smith is fluent in German, that was a translation, and translation depends a lot on the interpreter’s ability to express nuance and such. Second, all he’s saying is thateven prior to 9/11, black people in America didn’t live with the same sense of security as whites. This is a pretty stupid statement to make, as I’m fairly certain that Will Smith’s billions make it unlikely that he’s ever been in a situation similar to low-income people (regardless of color). It’s not the same at all, however, as saying that no black people died in the towers. Still waiting for that cite…
