Mr24pon 24 Jul 2008 at 10:50 am 1That was great!!
How I wish he was around today.
Sawbuckon 24 Jul 2008 at 10:53 am 2I just watched “Rio Bravo” for the umpteenth time last night.
God I miss these guys. Some boots will never be filled.
And the movie The Duke mentions was likely “War Wagon” - I’ll be watching that for the umpteenth time tonight - and I won’t be able to get the Ed Ames theme vocal out of my head for a week.
monkeyon 24 Jul 2008 at 11:31 am 3That was great.
If he was around today he should run for president.
Or come over here and he can teach our shower of shit a thing or two.
Jackon 24 Jul 2008 at 12:34 pm 4This was a time when real men ran America. Not the wasted youth of Woodstock

I don’t know whether to shake your hand or punch you.
Thanks either way!!
The Ugly Americanon 24 Jul 2008 at 2:25 pm 7The Duke had one of the most contagious laughs ever.
Vozon 24 Jul 2008 at 2:45 pm 8Too bad there aren’t more like him in Hollywood.
Amen to the Lord’s Prayer.
Matt Helmon 24 Jul 2008 at 3:11 pm 9Awesome.
Here’s another one with Dino and the Duke. Man, does the Duke have a great singing voice. You’d swear it was Sinatra.

Ratherreadon 24 Jul 2008 at 3:41 pm 10Rio Bravo. Sigh. I love that movie. I still remember the first time I saw it. I was sneering at the very idea of Dino playing a Westerner. My sneer was gone in about 2 seconds.
Matt Helmon 24 Jul 2008 at 3:44 pm 11It’s a mystery to me why Hawks remade Rio Bravo as El Dorado in 1966. I love both of them and feel guilty saying I prefer either Dino or Mitchum in the role.
Annaon 24 Jul 2008 at 3:47 pm 12Gee whiz, listening to that almost made me want to cry.
For a long time, the only John Wayne movie I saw was The Quiet Man, which I really really liked. I wasn’t much for westerns.
Then DH posted the Rio Bravo clip where Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson sang. Now I have Rio Bravo, The Searchers, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance on DVD. I’ll be watching JW more as I come across his other movies. He was one heck of a man on the screen. So glad to see that’s true in real life as well.
Moon 24 Jul 2008 at 3:50 pm 13I have a confession to make.
I have never seen a John Wayne film.
Please don’t shun me - help me, people! Which should be my first?
Penelope27on 24 Jul 2008 at 3:53 pm 14Oh, my Mo, that will never do….
There are so many good ones, but my favorites of his are The Searchers and The Quiet Man.

A little OT, but appropriate to the subject header…did you happen to catch “Hollywood Canteen” on TCM last night? A puff piece built around a romance between a GI & a starlet, it features almost all of Warner’s contract players as themselves in the title structure, commingling with GIs & showing their support for the troops. One of my fave bits: Roy Roger & Trigger doing their shtick, with Roy singing “Don’t Fence Me In”.
Totally inspiring, and if I could, I’d buy copies for all the crowd out there & say, “Now it’s YOUR turn — quit drooling over Obama & do something like this. Show some gratitude!” Can you imagine???
Eh. A fella can dream.
wanketteon 24 Jul 2008 at 4:17 pm 16p.s. The year was 1944, the war was II.
Griffon 24 Jul 2008 at 4:18 pm 17For John Wayne films: check out “Red River.”
ScottDSon 24 Jul 2008 at 5:05 pm 18wankette (and everyone else) -
You might want to check this out… http://www.classicflix.com/warner-bros-homefront-collection-november-a-308.html
Splashon 24 Jul 2008 at 6:06 pm 19Mo, I second ‘Red River’ but John Wayne is kinda the heavy in that one, and you do want to start out right, so I’d recommend the uber classic ‘Stagecoach’!
And that was a fantastic clip, by the way.
Audietooon 24 Jul 2008 at 6:37 pm 20To begin go with Stagecoach then The quiet Man Then Rio Bravo. Those are favorites of everyone. Agree about Red River pretty heavy.
I remember seeing that show when it was broadcast. Can’t remember the year but think it was the 60s.
jtf66on 24 Jul 2008 at 8:43 pm 21That was a truly moving piece…God, I love John Wayne. As for possible JW films to view…well, I agree with all those mentioned previously and I would add “True Grit” and “The Shootist” to the list. Thanks for the post…it was a definite pick-me-up.
wanketteon 24 Jul 2008 at 9:31 pm 22ScottDS,
Thanks for the tip!! GREAT site…
Robert Lindseyon 25 Jul 2008 at 8:04 am 23I’m posting this vid at my Biblical parenting blog.
Matt Helm, I was laughing out loud at work over that vid!
Is the Dean Martin show on VHS or DVD?
Moon 26 Jul 2008 at 9:38 am 24Thanks for the recs, everyone. Netflix is going to be busy!
