Campy Performance — [Rich]

Jack Black was swarmed, Robert Downey Jr. traded his porkpie hat for a pair of shades and Ben Stiller flashed his trademark “Blue Steel,” all to the delight of the Marines of Camp Pendleton who gathered for a special screening of the forthcoming film, Tropic Thunder.

Said Stiller:

We’re really happy to be here. And thank you for everything you do protecting our country

Bravo. More here and here.

    Nice.

What does Stiller think he’s doing thanking the troops? Didn’t we just learn from that Tim Robbins, The Lucky Ones trailer that that’s rube behavior.

Good to know, and good for them. :)

Speaking of Tropic Thunder and men and women in uniform though, does anyone have any clue as to what Kirk Lazarus is actually saying in the below posted link?

I think that’s supposed to be comically incoherent.

Ah, sort of in the same vein as “I’m a dude who’s playin’ a dude disguised like another dude”, then? ;)

    From the usatoday.com article:

Before the film began, a solemn video of the Star-Spangled Banner played on the screen, part of the theater’s standard opening. It was an incongruous intro to the raunchy, R-rated comedy, but the audience didn’t seem to mind.

The audience didn’t seem to mind?!?!? The Star-Spangled Banner is the standard opening! They’re men and women in uniform. They honor and respect the flag. USA Today should rethink their name.

Awesome. I have always liked Ben Stiller and love Robert Downy Jr. That is so awesome that they would go and do this for the guys and girls! Thanks guys! Thanks to one and all!

Wow, they took a major risk being around all those soldiers. Don’t they know that everyone in the U.S. Army is a psychologically-damaged ticking timebomb? They’re lucky they didn’t get raped and murdered.

All joking aside, they did a wonderful thing for our troops, bless their hearts. And I can’t wait to see this movie, it looks hilarious (although it looks to be alot bloodier than you might think- check out the red band trailer (http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/trailers/new-tropic-thunder-redband-trailer-might-be-the-trailer-of-the-year.php) if you don’t believe me).

I have been looking forward to Tropic Thunder all summer, and nothing I have heard about the film has discouraged me. This was a great thing they did for the troops, if only other stars would do more

I’ve always had a major crush on Ben Stiller. I think he’s sexier than Brad Pitt any day of the year. This looks like a pee your pants funny movie. I saw the preview at The Dark Knight and laughed so much the people sitting in front glared at me.

Like many above, have had this on the radar since seeing the first trailer. Iron Man, Dark Knight, Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express: the only movies I planned on seeing this summer and now knowing about the Camp Pendleton screening, I’ll see Tropic Thunder twice just like with Iron Man and Dark Knight. Good God, entertainers who get it!

That is so cool what they did! Sounds like they had a lot of fun. Do you guys sense a sort of bandwagon effect happening now with more actors coming out of the closet in support of the troops and their efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq? Maybe it’s something they always wanted to do but, with the poisonous atmosphere in Hollywood, were intimidated into not doing it. With anti-American, anti-troop movies losing money hand-over-fist, maybe the tide is turning. I certainly hope so. With stars the caliber of Downey Jr., Black, and Stiller doing this, it certainly is encouraging.

Maybe that’s why they were on a MARINE base.

The national anthem plays before every movie shown in a military movie theater. But to know that you’d have to have been in a military movie theater before. They also play retreat at 1700 every day, and if you are outside you are required to render honors. Aren’t we military types strange?

Morton, get back in the gym, it’s good for you. I need you healthy to star in every movie ever ever.

I love RDJ’s response to a recent press junket question about gas prices…

“Gas prices don’t affect me. I drive a Bentley and I think I get a mile and a half to the gallon—so I’m a pig.”

Some of the other questions were even more asinine… Link
