Pro-American, Conservative, Pro-War Blockbuster Coming To DVD

The conservative, pro-American, pro-War on Terror blockbuster, Iron Man, has an official DVD release date of September 30th.

Iron Man, unlike those fifteen or so pro-abandon-the-Iraqis-to-slaughter films, made money. And it’s conservative … and pro-American … and showed Islamofascists getting what they had coming … and it’s conservative … and pro-American … and every single liberal film flopped … but not Iron Man … it’s a mammoth hit … and pro-American … and pro-War on Terror … like Vantage Point … which also made money … and was pro-American … and pro War on Terror … unlike every single liberal film … which flopped.

Just saying.

My favorite part of this conservative masterpiece was how the villain turned out to be not the Muslim radicals, but the evil white big businessman ™ manipulating them.
Iron Man was a decent movie, but it’s been radically overhyped. The final act is atrocious because of the above shoehorning, and Tony himself is never really ABOUT anything, except a vague sentiment that his weapons are being used in bad ways.
Add to that the usual throwaway bits like the Stereotype saying that the power source doesn’t really work but was just put there to appease the hippies, and how Tony wants out of the weapon-making business… gotta say, I don’t really see it. The “big reveal” kinda 180’s and sabotages the “Muslims using his weapons” thing. Apart from being hokey as hell.

Raza was not taking orders from Obadiah Stane, in fact, he reneged on his promise to kill Tony Stark at the beginning I think “manipulating them” was too strong.

Anyway, I cannot wait. Iron Man along with Indy IV is why I bought a Blue-Ray player, bring on the Mandarin and Crimson Dynamo in Iron Man 2!

I have to agree with gn. Loved Ironman, and the movie is not ANTI-American, but the whole “pro-American” thing is vastly overstated. Just be happy it isn’t anti-American and enjoy it for the popcorn fun it merely is.

September 30th? Dang, 1 day late to ask for it as a birthday present!

… still waiting ’til Blue Ray gets cheaper. Bought an HD-DVD player from Walmart, last year for under $100. Of course, it’s obsolete - but it’s cool to show people my work in HD (works perfectly with my Mac DVD authoring software… but I digress.

Hopefully Walmart will have another sale. Oh, yes, I did like “Iron Man” - bit slow after the initial hook - but it picked up. And… can’t terrorists just be terrorists, for Pete’s sake!

“…the movie is not ANTI-American, but the whole “pro-American” thing is vastly overstated.”

Exactly. I love Iron Man. The first forty minutes are stunning. But it is more neutral/liberal than it is conservative or pro-American. As I said on an earlier post, Indy IV is far more conservative or pro-American than Iron Man.

The subtext of Iron Man is ultimately we did it to ourselves. If Stark didn’t produce weapons, he would not have been threatened to be killed by the weapons he made.

I love how RDJr. plays Stark in the first third of the movie, especially how he dresses down (literally and verbally) the smug blond reporter. But remember, this conservative Stark is seen as the man he has to evolve away from. Old Stark voted for Bush. I cannot guarantee new Stark would not vote for Obama. he might not..the sequel will tell.

Again, I enjoyed the film and I am glad that it was not anti-American, but when I’m in a pro-American mood this fall, I think I’ll play the slugfest between Indy and the Stalinist communist before I watch Iron Man again. Hey, at least they flat out make Indy a Repub with “I like Ike.”

    I’m just sayin’.

Not really a conservative movie but it is definutly a pro-military and pro-America movie. Still it does feature the hero critizing the military industrial complex and has a rich white businessman not an islamic terrorist as the main villian. I agree the movie rocked but it wasn’t conservative. It was not liberal and thats more then good enough for me.

Yeah, I don’t see how this can be extolled as a very “conservative” movie. Yes, there was kicking terrorist ass, and yes, there is a theme of personal accountability, which certainly seems to be a trait exclusive to conservatives. But for someone who so loathes cinematic sucker punches, you seem to be overlook a couple of big ones in this, Harry: the “please the hippies” line that gn mentioned, and Obadiah Stane saying something along the lines of “peace through strength” in the midst of his battle with Stark.

To me it seems middle of the road when it comes to politics but strongly pro-military. Which is good enough for me.

As resident comic nerd, I loved the movie. Stark, like Batman, has politics that are a bit all over the place. The only ways in which I would call this conservative is that it doesn’t piss on the military, does believe that violence is needed to stop bad people, and shows an enterepeneur can be good guy. On the liberal side, you have the evil white corporate head (granted he was a major villain in the comics in the mid-late 80s), Stark’s guilt over making weapons, and desire to get into the alternative energy business.

Oh, for those who don’t know, the movie may be setting up a conflict with China for the sequel. The “Ten Rings” is a direct reference to Iron Man uber-villain The Mandarin. It’ll be interesting to see how they PC the Fu-Manchu type character.

  13. […] who saw an authoritarian/Conservative bent to the character. Similar things were said about Iron Man being a shill for the Military Industrial Complex and Superman as a tool of Jingoism. Pretty much any super hero movie gets parsed for […]
