Trailer: “An American Carol”
Posted by Dirty Harry on Thursday, August 14th, 2008
This was put on Youtube from this evening’s O’Reilly Factor. Excellent trailer. Enjoy.
UPDATE ON THE REVIEW: As far as my review, no one associated with the film has ever told me I couldn’t run one. Not at the screening, not since. I’m the one being careful. I’m not a journalist, don’t pretend to be, and have no intention of doing anything — even to be first — that will upend their gameplan.
I can tell you as someone whose own film is currently in the hands of a savvy sales agent that releasing a film is a very delicate and tricky thing. Even a positive review risks giving away something damaging — something that could give the other side ammo — and I won’t take that risk.
I’m a partisan. The Cause comes first. My review will be honest, but not released until the nod’s given. My admiration and respect for what Zucker and Steve McEveety are doing trumps all other considerations. I don’t know the men. They’re not even acquaintances. But we share a tank.

Does this mean the push to promote the film has started? Do we have to wait until closer to the release before we see your review, Harry?
Kevin Farley looks great as Michael Malone.
trzupron 14 Aug 2008 at 8:14 pm 7Actual comment on the film from IMDB (I am NOT making this up Dave Barry):
Subject: “This film’s premise is wrong…”
Opening Line of Message: “Michael Moore would never want to do away with the 4th of July.”
And that is about the most intelligent portion of the post. I will spare you the rest.
This person will, presumably, vote. When we establish the new order, can we PLEASE work in some type of subtle IQ test into voting machines? Like, “push these buttons in the following order in order to activate the machine: green, blue, red, blue.” This would solve a lot of problems.
Thank you.

MovieBobon 14 Aug 2008 at 8:56 pm 17Wow.
“That explains the slapping” and “Try the last names” are solid jokes, but it’s pretty damning that it can’t even make it out of the opening title-cards without looking half-baked.
Not to be all “Comedy 101,” but: Not-Michael-Moore in front of the “Che Guevara Hospital” right after the lauditory opening remark? That’s funny. Short, clever, ironic. Followed by “Totally arrogant?” Sloppy. Let’s the audience get too far ahead of the joke. (replace that bit with “Humble,” and THEN it’s funny.) Even aside from the politics, which seems comparitively muted compared to whats known of the movie-proper, it gives much more the impression of “Epic Movie” than “Naked Gun,” which is a pity.
It appears as though I’ll be telling Myra, Zardoz, Postal and Zabriske and Apple that the Box O’ Disasterously Misfired Message Movies will soon be welcoming a new resident…

This film looks like it could be fun, I will probably have to check it out. It is difficult to see anyone else besides George C. Scott as Patton, although Kelsey Grammar should do a good job. It is interesting no one who plays Patton tries to replicate his notorious high-pitched voice, which he despised (I would have chosen Douglas MacArthur as opposed to Patton, but that is just me)

abeon 15 Aug 2008 at 2:51 am 30Wow, the “Michael Malone” character wants to do away with the fourth of July and “destroy” America? Talk about a strawman…
Reality check:
“As a young boy, I loved the American flag. I’d lead my younger sisters in patriotic parades up and down the sidewalk, waving the flag, blowing a whistle and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance over and over until my sisters begged me to let them go back to their Easy-Bake Oven.
I loved singing the national anthem. I won an essay contest on “What the Flag Means to Me.” I decorated my bicycle with little American flags for a Fourth of July parade and won a prize for that too. I became an Eagle Scout and proudly promised to do my duty to God and country. And every year I asked to be the one who planted the flag on the grave of my uncle, a paratrooper who was killed in World War II. I was taught to admire his sacrifice, and I hoped to grow up and do my part, as he had, to keep us free.” ”
–Michael Moore

Conan O'Lenomanon 15 Aug 2008 at 3:25 am 32There’s something deeply satisfying about seeing Michael Malone get slapped multiple times, worth the price of admission! The line “They’re WOMEN!” is just hysterical. I’m looking forward to this one.
Nickolas Dilmoreon 15 Aug 2008 at 4:30 am 33Abe–
Have you … I dunno … actually watched any of Moore’s films? He can say “I Love America!” and wear American flag hats till the Second Coming, but his actual output leaves little doubt about how much he actually “loves” this nation.
Tangoon 15 Aug 2008 at 4:38 am 34Here as well as IMDB & YouTube, the “critics” comments are very telling. I just LOVE the “truthers”: Kettle, meet Black.”
The trailer looks very promsing. If it approaches the level of Airplane, it’s a winner.
Bob Whiteon 15 Aug 2008 at 5:01 am 35abe quoted Michael Moore describing his own sense of patriotism, but that essay goes on to equate true patriotism with opposition to the Iraq War (and the Vietnam War, of course) and with a socialist agenda (apparently, we’re supposed to feel sorry that some people work at minimum wage — I guess the world won’t be perfect until the communist ideal arrives and we all get paid the same no matter what work we do).
http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0704-05.htm
I am not suggesting that it is unpatriotic to oppose the war, but I do disagree with Moore. I support the President in his call to war both in Iraq and Afghanistan and I oppose Moore’s socialist agenda. I don’t consider him a patriot, despite his claim to be one in that essay, because he is constantly derogating a nation that has done more for other countries than any other nation in the history of mankind (but in Moore’s odd brain, has never done enough).
He’s a whiner. Patriots don’t whine.
Buck Turgidsonon 15 Aug 2008 at 5:14 am 36Hey, abe, let’s take the Moore quote at face value. Even Scrooge and Darth Vader were good guys at first.
JohnJon 15 Aug 2008 at 5:15 am 37Looks awesome!
Bubbaon 15 Aug 2008 at 5:25 am 38In response to Abe’s insistance that Michael Moore loves his country, Bob White pointed out the context of the quote Abe gave. The article shows that Moore loves this country only insofar as it conforms to his far-far-left ideals.
“Let’s create a world in which, when people see the Stars and Stripes, they will think of us as the people who brought peace to the world, who brought good-paying jobs to all citizens and clean water for the world to drink.”
What’s omitted from that little list? America’s first and finest principle: freedom.
Though the movie is clearly satire, I actually could see Moore protesting Independence Day for a couple of reasons.
1) Our independence was secured by the use of guns, and guns are evil. See, Bowling for Columbine.
2) If it weren’t for our independence, we would have nationalized health care long ago, alongside the British. See, Sicko.
A holiday celebrating our use of guns to secure our freedoms? How barbaric. I could actually see the left proposing that we adopt some other holiday — Earth Day, perhaps, or Labor Day, or maybe a new Day of Contrition for all the evils we’ve committed — instead of keeping Independence Day as our most revered secular holiday. What’s preventing that isn’t the lunacy of the idea, but the obvious resistance it would engender.
Bubbaon 15 Aug 2008 at 5:27 am 39(Heck, how many leftists bitch and moan about our national anthem because it’s militaristic? Logically, Independence Day is as troubling or even as offensive as The Star-Spangled Banner, for similar reasons.)

RufusTon 15 Aug 2008 at 5:43 am 42“…and clean water for the world to drink.”
Bubba, tell Michael Moore we’ve already brought the world Coca-Cola. We’ve made it cheaper and more abundant than water and it packs about 1,000 calories per ounce.
Ratherreadon 15 Aug 2008 at 5:51 am 43Looks very funny. I remember Michael Moore back in the day of TV Nation. He was relatively neat looking back then (sort of) but I thought he was vastly unfunny.
RufusTon 15 Aug 2008 at 5:52 am 44I was a little skeptical of this also. Comedy is so very hard to do, and this is a very, very tricky subject. Judging from this brief trailer I think Zucker will pull this off. And look at the number of posts this trailer has already generated… Michael Moore is a hugely (pun intended) contentious figure. A lot of folks will buy a ticket just to see him get slapped. And Zucker’s put in some “Scary Movie” sophomoric level Middle East jokes along with some patriotic red-meat. This doesn’t look like “Blazing Saddles” or “Young Frankenstein,” it has more of the “Airplane,” “Scary Movie” and South Park “throw everything against the wall and hope something stickes” vibe, but that’s fairly popular with today’s successful comedies. This will appeal to a lot of demographics, and it looks like that’s what Zucker intended.
To those who complained in yesterday’s post about the heavy-handedness of the World Trade Center dust reference; “A Christmas Carol” has some striking, dire images; the starving children under Christmas Present’s cloak, the depiction of Scrooge’s dead body and grave… Every production I’ve ever seen, including the Mickey Mouse Scrooge McDuck and Muppet versions have the grave scene and other serious moments.
In other words, put down the kool-aid and step away from the keyboard.
Leo Grinon 15 Aug 2008 at 5:53 am 45This film looks less like Airplane! and more like, say, Raising Arizona, a film with a solid dramatic core anchoring all the absurd hilarity.
Glennon 15 Aug 2008 at 6:11 am 46I saw the trailer on The Factor and I laughed my butt off. I am no longer worried that this will be another “Half-hour News Hour.” I believe the Zuckmeister has come through for us. I can hardly wait - I want to see it with a couple of old buddies from my cold-war submarine service days.
Note that Zuck Man put the COMEDY first (as is his natural ability). Half-hour News Hour strung together lame, unfunny gags and expected people to laugh “to support the conservative cause.” Always a huge mistake.
Jane Fonda, John Cussack, and Tim Robbins . . . put THIS in your pipe and smoke it!
Forlournedon 15 Aug 2008 at 6:33 am 47Like John Rambo, I’ll be there on the first day it comes out! And like the first ‘red ringed’ trailer of John Rambo with all that carnage, this trailer has got me pumped up for more belly laughs and satire on the far left of sanity.
The cut on the trailer was hilarious with “moore” trying to leave while beating off the Cubans from his boat!!!
CRon 15 Aug 2008 at 6:41 am 48All week O’Reilly has been denigrating his own performance in this movie. I watched it last night on his show and I thought he was really good.
Re M. Moore: He’s also a hypocrite. He has stock in oil companies and he hires non-union people so he doesn’t have to pay union wages.
alexdroogon 15 Aug 2008 at 6:49 am 49Well, I guess I’m in the minority because I think it looks lame.
I chuckled at the “explains the slapping” line, the Muhammed and Hussein bit (mostly because of Robert Davi’s reaction) and the “master of satire” thing.
But the suicide bomber joke fell flat. Did they really have to add “All the good ones are gone”? May as well have looked at the screen and asked, “Get it?”
And a “mistaking butch women for men” joke? Really? In all of history I’ve laughed at that joke once: http://video.aol.com/partner/hulu/the-simpsons-lesbian-bar/_2JOLZBu1Eh_fhLmtW6BMvmRI1sm5qIC
It just looked too much like the recent “Genre Movie” trailers, filled with easy and tired jokes. Of course, those damn movies keep getting made so I imagine they’re making money, which means crafting a trailer in that style is good marketing.
But I guess I was hoping for something more than “Michael Moore is fat” jokes. Maybe I’m wrong, and I hope I am, but that trailer just didn’t get me excited.

“1) Our independence was secured by the use of guns, and guns are evil. See, Bowling for Columbine.”
You’ll seldom find me defending Moore or that particular movie overall, but that’s not an accurate representation of the point. His whole “angle” in the film is that it’s NOT - in his view - the guns or the violent entertainment that’s responsible for Columbine type violence; but rather that there’s something fundamentally violent/paranoid/aggressive about American culture and that even without the guns we’d find a way to hurt eachother.
I don’t agree, of course, but the man at least deserves to be criticized accurately.

“And if it isn’t Airplane? Excuse me, after 8 years in the desert complaining that the tap water isn’t Evian is rather ungrateful.”
Got to agree with that. Parody is dying. Friedberg and Seltzer have its blood on their hands (I’m tempted to start a movement to get them banned from making movies), and David Zucker is throwing it a life preserver.
But I doubt the same people who are going to attack this film minded the heavy-handed treatment of energy companies in Naked Gun 2 1/2.

Jack Marinoon 15 Aug 2008 at 6:58 pm 67America was started by an act of war or better an ACT OF TREASON against our KING! The Declaration of Independence was the first time a nation cut the bonds to their King who had Divine right of rule over his subjects. America is the only country that was created out of an act of war for the sole purpose of liberty.
What other nation in the history of this evil, bloody, war loving world we all live in was started for freedom. Every Empire, nation set out to conquer other nations for their gold, women, land and resources. America is and always will be a shinning city on that Hill RR always talked about. These liberals have the gaul to put this country down and yet they believe in a Marxist view of the world and that useless mooch who allow his wife to die of starvation, was the cause of over 150 million people’s death since the 1990s.
The liberals are the root of all evil in this world and they make the shittiest of films and hire the most no talent girl-men to be heroes in films. The have introduced the cancer of mediocrity to America and that fat, unshaven slob couldn’t get a job as a PA if he didn’t hate America. He loves the money he makes and getting his fat unkempt look on the boob tube.
What I like about Abe/Bob’s reactions is that for 40 years liberal Hollywood has been pissing on America, conservatives, God, Country, in film after film. Now we have one major studio level player pissing on one fat no talent filmmaker and these two lose their minds. What are you two guys going to do if someone sets up an independent movie studio that makes 52 films a year that have conservative themes and that make liberals look like the schmucks they really are? How are you two going to handle this, when one film like this causes you two to mess in your pants?

“What I like about Abe/Bob’s reactions is that for 40 years liberal Hollywood has been pissing on America, conservatives, God, Country, in film after film. Now we have one major studio level player pissing on one fat no talent filmmaker and these two lose their minds.”
This isn’t “losing my mind,” friend, this is “Aw, crap, here we go again.” I have a damn good feeling that I know exactly how this is going to go down (bad movie propped-up for it’s politics, people getting heated and fighting over a product that doesn’t deserve it, all involved being intellectually lessened for the experience) and that it ain’t gonna be pretty.
“What are you two guys going to do if someone sets up an independent movie studio that makes 52 films a year that have conservative themes and that make liberals look like the schmucks they really are?”
Well, first I’d ask how the movies are. If they’re good? I will have no issue. If they’re bad? I’ll review them negatively. If they’re bad but get propped-up as otherwise due to politics, I will weep for the future of the medium.
Jack Marinoon 16 Aug 2008 at 12:30 am 71maatkare.. thank you for your correction. I type too fast, never use spell check and I do to english what Hitler did to Poland. LOL. I meant to say gall. Wade.. Karl Marx’s wife died of starvation. He refuse to hold a job and lived off of the generosity of HG Wells, Arthur C Doyle and a few other Brit blue blood.
Bob…
Since neither of us can tell the future, and I do feel since this is the only film of its kind, at this time. It could have the reaction that Team America had. America isn’t as jaded about films as you are. I say this because you are a movie critic and so you look for things instead of going in a theater to be entertain. Since most of the films made out here reflect most if not all of your point of view, your spidey senses don’t go on full alert when you see a film made by a liberal. However, with this film you will be on full alert and will be a lot tougher for you to be objective.
As far as a studio making films with conservative values you act as if this has never happen before. The golden age of Hollywood all five studios made 52 films a year so that their theater chains could have one new film a week. All these films weren’t all great. Some were classic, others were just films to fill in the slate. The same thing will happen today with a studio that makes films with conservative ideals. Just like today we have only a handful of films made by Hollywood that are good the majority are junk.
However, because of this high awareness and this cultural war we find ourselves in, things will be done a whole lot different. A lot of films will be in your face attacking the left and others will be clever and more subtle in their story line. Either way you will hate a lot of these films just because of the blatant political content and others you may find clever and truthful. The whole idea of this studio isn’t the conservative politics that will change Hollywood, it will be the market forces that determined everything we do.
People don’t want to pay 30 bucks to see a film and buy a bucket of soggy popcorn to be told, you suck, your God sucks, your country sucks, your culture sucks, your President sucks and your ice isn’t cold enough. People are fed up with Oliver Stone and the Fat unshaven Moore of the film world. Someone is going to tap into this well and it is going to be a gusher. I only wished it was little old me…..
I still have hope of you yet Bob. You are still in your twenties and you grew up in the Clinton years. That was a tough break for you. Most of the kids I know from that era are way to cynical and they have never had any hardships to be cynical. When I was young I grew up when JFK was on a roll. So by the time I was your age, I was very idealistic and still am. Just asked me about the future success of my film! I lived through those so called turbulent 60s and disco 70s and coasted in the Reagan years. Too bad we didn’t have another Ronnie to slip into the Clinton years, Bob you would be a die hard Conservative!!!!
I still think you will flip sometime in your 30s…

You just described me, I think. My wife has been through a larger amount of ugly shit than I have experienced — I have fewer physical scars, for example, not to mention that she had to live through her parents’ divorce whereas mine are still happily married. She got picked on in school, whereas I got ignored completely. And yet, having endured all the miserable, petty, frustrating little slings and arrows life has halfheartedly thrown at her, her attitude to life is less cynical and misanthropic than mine.
I grew up the son of a successful businessman, went to private schools, never lacked for anything, never had an ugly day or a miserable experience in my life — and I turned out bitter, depressed and paranoid, and in the last ten years I tried to kill myself five times.

A bit of cynicism is good for anyone but kids like Bob take it to the extreme. People this cynical seem to me have no value in themselves or other people which is too bad.

“It could have the reaction that Team America had.”
So… very minor to dissapointing boxoffice success, mildly-perplexed reviews and respectable but hardly earth-shaking DVD sales, then? (For the record, I consider Team America to be probably the best political satire movie of the decade so far; but there’s no denying that it did NOT set the world afire like the duo’s previous South Park movie did.)
“Since most of the films made out here reflect most if not all of your point of view, your spidey senses don’t go on full alert when you see a film made by a liberal.”
Jack… I’m damn close to an Objectivist if I’m close to anything - NOTHING reflects my point of view
“Equilibrium” (the greatest science fiction film of the MILLENIUM) came close. I’m not harder on conservative films, “conservatives” are simply making REALLY bad movies right now. Say what you will of Hollywood “liberals,” NONE of them have produced a film (or book, or video game, or whatever) franchise as jaw-droppingly bad as “Left Behind.”
EPorvaznikon 17 Aug 2008 at 12:08 am 75Yo, Bobby. If you’re willing to count the Rendition-Valley of Elah-Lions for Lambs-Redacted-War Inc.-Stop Loss-etc. as a franchise of craptacularly awful anti-war/victory/US movies, do believe they’d make the Left Behind series one of Shakespearean levels. Yes, no, maybe so?
hexon 22 Aug 2008 at 8:49 am 76Karl Marx’s wife died of starvation. He refuse to hold a job and lived off of the generosity of HG Wells, Arthur C Doyle and a few other Brit blue blood.
Karl Marx’s wife didn’t die of starvation. She died in old age, a year or so before Marx himself, and they were well past the years of poverty at that stage.
Now - back to the movie. It looks like a real turkey, regardless of the politics. But when was the last time that Zucker actually produced a decent comedy?
