Meanwhile Over At Pajamas…

My piece on David Zucker is up:
Ironically, Zucker could have made a fifth Scary Movie installment without anyone raising a single question about his sanity, character, career choices, or “funny bone.” But a bold, thoroughly original, risky, shot across the establishment’s bow? And here I thought liberals admired iconoclasts.
You’ll recognize many of the points as ones frequently made here, but this was an opportunity for an 800 word summation that would reach a broader audience. This character assassination of Hollywood conservatives must be exposed, ridiculed, called what it is, and forced, like all bigotry, into the shadows of shame.
Bullies and cowards, that’s all they are.

I remember bookmarking a bunch of anti-Passion articles and I believe I have some that are dated as early as 2002 with “academics” raising stink about the film.
Also, I have exchanged posts with Devin Faraci before on another film website and do not let his comments get to you. Forget the fact that he is a fairly smug type…he actually doesn’t even know film that well and always responded with the most cliched of posts.

You try to submit Goldstein’s column as further evidence of a “Passioning,” but if you read it, there is nothing offensive or deriding about it.
From a business standpoint, I think Zucker is hoping for a Passion-like controversy, which is why he seems to be striking the martyr’s pose (”I’m sacrificing my career…etc.”). I mean, it’s hard to deny that the furor surrounding Gibson’s film certainly played a significant role in its box office.
Could this movie be funny? Sure. I love a lot of Zucker’s stuff. Could it also be tasteless and hectoring? Yep. Could it just be bad? If Zucker’s last 12 years is any indication, it’s certainly got a good shot.
I’ll have to see for myself.
The Ugly Americanon 21 Aug 2008 at 2:19 pm 6Matt: Google is your friend.
For weeks now, nearly every entertainment blog out there has been trashing the director and its stars, based solely on their political views.
Defamer in particular has made a point of singling out Jon Voight for ridicule.
I’m sure Zucker would gladly trade in his martyrdom for even a shred of fairness from industry critics.
These people are so thick-headed that they simply couldn’t fathom how someone as cool as Dennis Hopper could be a conservative. Perish the thought.
