Paul Newman Takes A Final Spin
Posted by Dirty Harry on Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Talk about bittersweet…
Legendary petrolhead Paul Newman took his GT1 Corvette out for a few laps earlier this month as he said goodbye to one of his greatest loves. The actor and former driver is terminally ill with lung cancer and is believed to have just weeks to live. Lime Rock Park race track in Connecticut was close for two hours so that Newman, aged 83, could take his race car out for the last time. His friends, family and race team mechanics were in attendance for Newman’s final race.
Cool Hand Luke goes down swinging.

Johnny Ed's Babyon 31 Aug 2008 at 10:09 am 2Sean Penn says more stupid things in one day than Paul Newman has ever said in his life. He was a liberal that never acted like conservatives still live in caves. And like Steve McQueen he knew how to race.
I fear the average intelligence of liberals in Hollywood is going to take steep dive when he dies.
God bless him.

JohnJon 31 Aug 2008 at 10:32 am 4Sad news for everyone. Newman has been one of Hollywood’s finest for a long time. Thoughts and prayers for him and his family.

you beat me to the punch.
Newman was a pure class act. An American original

Gina Dalfonzoon 31 Aug 2008 at 11:25 am 8God bless him. I’m glad he got one more race.

I think he’s done enough good in his life that he’ll win his next race.
eeyoreon 31 Aug 2008 at 11:41 am 10My father died of cancer last November. When we drove him home from the hospital, he said it was his last car ride. I saw him gazing intently out the window and didn’t start any conversations with him, just let him look at the countryside. He also talked of the last project he completed, his last ride on the tractor and even the last time he signed his name (on a birthday card to my sister).
Knowing it will be the last time for something Newman loves is so special for him and his family. They are in my thoughts this weekend and I wish them the best.
Take care, Mr. Newman. You entertained us, made us think of things we never considered before and proved that your charity extends far beyond words but into deeds that will live beyond you.
mjkon 31 Aug 2008 at 11:44 am 11My thoughts and prayers are with this man’s family and friends. When he passes away, it’ll be a real loss to us and to Hollywood.
Stickwick Staperson 31 Aug 2008 at 11:45 am 12That is just too cool.
EPorvaznikon 31 Aug 2008 at 12:01 pm 13I didn’t realize how choked up this story would make me (probably reading he’s 83, like my grandmothers, did it). Like others have said: Newman = class, class, class!!!
Carolynon 31 Aug 2008 at 12:28 pm 14Mr. Newman, God speed and God bless.
And thank you for all you have given me over the years. Not just as an actor but as a person. God bless you.
johnmark7on 31 Aug 2008 at 1:45 pm 15There’s much to be said about having the chance to say goodbye to all the things you’ve loved.
I wonder, though, is it better to know that you’re soon to die or to just simply die? I have no idea.
Stickwick Staperson 31 Aug 2008 at 2:07 pm 16johnmark — Speaking only from the perspective of the ones left behind, it is MUCH better to know beforehand. I’ve experienced both, and sudden death is much harder to deal with.
Maxtypeon 31 Aug 2008 at 2:09 pm 17I’ve been praying for you and your family Mr. Newman.
I just watched ‘Exodus’ again Thursday night. What a great film, Paul playing hard-as-nails Ari Ben-Caanan. It’s a good way to remind yourself to Never Forget the Holocaust, and why we have to win the War on Terror.

I agree. My dad died of a brain hemmorage in less than five minutes while my mom died from cancer over about a 5 month period. I was lucky to have stopped by my parent’s house the morning my dad died and I was with him for a couple of hours before it happened. But my brothers and sisters could only come to the hospital where it was too late.
When my mom died all the kids and grandkids and greatgrand child were with her.
Stephanieon 31 Aug 2008 at 2:38 pm 19My Dad died suddenly so I think while its heart breaking to watch its harder to deal with that phone call. It really is.
Paul Newman is a great guy. I will miss him. This is sad.
