Obama Flip-Flops On The War
Posted by Dirty Harry on Monday, February 11th, 2008
Well, last night on 60 Minutes Obama stepped in it, flip-flopping on his Iraq position.:
“At a time when American casualties are down, at a time when the violence is down, particularly affecting the Iraqi population, is that the right time to try and set time tables for withdrawing all American troops? I mean you talked about…the end of 2009,” Kroft remarked.
“Yeah, absolutely. I think now is precisely the time. I think that it is very important for us to send a clear signal to the Iraqis that we are not gonna be here permanently. We’re not gonna set up permanent bases. That they are going to have to resolve their differences and get their country functioning,” Obama said.
“And you pull out according to that time table, regardless of the situation? Even if there’s serious sectarian violence?” Kroft asked.
“No, I always reserve as commander in chief, the right to assess the situation,” Obama replied.
The Corner writes:
First he’s for timetables, then he isn’t. As one McCainiac just put it to me, “Shades of John Kerry. We already beat this guy. The last thing we need right now is indecisiveness.”
Obama can ask Mitt Romney about how merciless McCain is when it comes to reading into his opponents’ words on timetables.
This is after Obama intentionally mischaracterized McCain’s “100 Years in Iraq” comment as a “100 year war.” Captain Ed watched and finds Obama not ready for primetime:
And then, risibly, Obama makes the exact point that Bush, McCain, and even Hillary make about Iraq. As a CinC [Commanderin Chief], he would have to have the options for staying open to him if the strategic situation called for an extended deployment. What if that remained true for the next five years? The next ten? What if the need to counter Islamist terror remained for the next 100 years?
Obama has a gift for communication and a heart in the right place. What he lacks is a specific agenda, an ability to make decisions, and a platform other than the vapid redundancy of “change”. He isn’t ready for prime time.
Obama speaks pretty but he’s just another liberal. Is America ready for a flip-flopper on the war? What will his supporters say once they come to learn he’s as ready to stay in Iraq as Bush?
ADDED: Reader James questions my buying McCain’s argument about Romney’s inconsistency about the surge. I heard Romney’s quotes in question and think he was parsing his words and throwing out buzzwords like “timetables” in order to have a place to run and hide. And I completely agreed with McCain that Romney was using the “word of the day,” which was “timetables.”
Also, I was thoroughly thoroughly disgusted that when Governor Romney did not back the surge and found Romney’s response to his unwillingness to back the surge in that final debate to be weak and unacceptable.
Romney simply isn’t the conservative to me that he is to many of you. Reagan said he didn’t leave the party — the party left him. Meaning, he was always a conservative and then the Democrats lost their minds. Romney became a conservative at 58 years-old. On the key issues of abortion, gun control, etc… Romney became a conservative when he decided to run for President. You call him a conservative — I call him an opportunist.
I don’t always agree with McCain but he has convictions and I’ll take conviction over opportunism any day. I also remember an early debate when McCain called Romney out for parsing his words over whether or not the surge was working. That’s when I became a McCain man.

Jameson 12 Feb 2008 at 3:07 am 2Wow, your comments on Romney’s surge position are just dishonest. Being a fan of your writing I had to read it twice and go back to your prior post. Romney’s point about timetables could not have been clearer. I surely hope that goals and targets have been set within the administration since day one. Not having any milestones to meet would be sheer incompetence. Did you hear Romney’s full statement? I hope you didn’t cause if you did you’re just credibility is suspect. Maybe you missed the line in the very same statement Romney made that McCain left out? Romney emphatically said that he did not endorse a public pull out date. He couldn’t have said it any clearer. I can respect your opinion to endorse McCain, and disagree with it. But its hard to respect someone floating a big lie.
Jameson 12 Feb 2008 at 4:58 am 3If you endorsed McCain because he snookered you with a Big Lie, what will you do with the truth?

Flipperon 02 Sep 2008 at 1:59 pm 18It shows Obama’s inexperience in world affairs and especially sensitive matters like this. Last one for me was his “canned” response to the Russia’s invasion of Georgia. It can be learned and he’s a bright student but can we afford to pay for it and wait” for education to kick-in?
