Very Sad News: Barack Obama’s Grandmother Has Died

Posted by Dirty Harry on Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Madelyn Dunham lived a good long life, long enough to witness the young man she raised so selflessly reach the cusp of his historic quest for the American presidency. How sad, though, she didn’t survive to see what could well be a successful end to that quest tomorrow.

As Ed Morrisey writes, she sounded like a remarkable woman

Really sad. Although, I have to say, I hope Barack doesn’t get some kind of sympathy vote.

  2. Growltigeron 03 Nov 2008 at 2:56 pm 2

    Rest in peace, Grandma.

May she rest in peace and God bring comfort to her loved ones. Death is the equalizer, whether you be the President or a stay at home mom.

  5. TROon 03 Nov 2008 at 3:16 pm 5

    May she rest in peace.

And if you ever want any evidence that conservative are better than liberals just imagine what horrible things the left would be saying about John McCain’s mother or Sarah Palin’s parents or grandparents if they passed away today.

TRO: You’re right. Not our finest moment here. Emotion’s high.

    Very sad to hear.

  10. BillBoneheadon 03 Nov 2008 at 3:41 pm 10

Much as I disagree with Barry and his politics, I must say RIP and much sympathy to his grandma.

  11. Glenn Kennyon 03 Nov 2008 at 3:42 pm 11

Good on ya, Harry. A lot of people on both sides of the political divide could learn from your example—fight like mad for what you believe, but don’t lose sight of the humanity that binds all of us.

It’ a sad day for the Obama family. And some folks need to learn that if you have nothing good to say, then say nothing.

  13. USS Benon 03 Nov 2008 at 4:11 pm 13

It is a sad day for the Obama family.
I’m glad he got to spend some time with her before she passed.

  14. Road Warrioron 03 Nov 2008 at 4:14 pm 14

I can’t read half the comments here, is there a technical glitch?

  15. Megon 03 Nov 2008 at 4:16 pm 15

Agreed, it’s a shame that she didn’t live to see him win. Not that I’d like him to win, or anything, but it’d be sad if he did and she wasn’t around to join in celebrating.

Oh well, I probably put that poorly.

  16. thudon 03 Nov 2008 at 4:20 pm 16

I am sorry but I just don’t feel the loss for many reasons but nothing worth handing ammunition to our opponents…so nothing to say.

  17. Scuffleon 03 Nov 2008 at 4:20 pm 17

I knew at least one person would be piping such nonsense, TRO, so I suppose you take the prize. Your fantasies are nothing but your fantasies, but your attempt to wring some kind of victory out of this is pretty undignified.

  18. TROon 03 Nov 2008 at 4:55 pm 18

“I knew at least one person would be piping such nonsense, TRO, so I suppose you take the prize. Your fantasies are nothing but your fantasies, but your attempt to wring some kind of victory out of this is pretty undignified.”

Victory? I am not looking for a victory. I was just stating a sad fact that can be proven by any dip into the cesspool that is the Democratic Underground, Firedoglake, DailyKOS, HuffPO, and so on and so on.

My prayers are sincere and noted on my own blog, but that doesn’t keep me from pointing the obvious that there is a difference between the two groups as evidenced by DH’s moderation of inappropriate comments. No such moderation would occur on those blogs I assure you.

  19. Supramom2000on 03 Nov 2008 at 4:58 pm 19

I also wish her Godspeed on her journey and my prayers for all of her family.

And TRO - one only need to remind others of the horrid, despicable remarks surrounding Tony Snow’s death and Mrs. Reagan’s injuries to understand how right you really are.

  20. TROon 03 Nov 2008 at 4:59 pm 20

Oh yes, DH, if you feel my comment about how liberals would treat such a sad event is not appropriate please don’t hesitate to delete it. I don’t think it is or I wouldn’t have written it, but it’s your blog and naturally you get to choose. If nothing else I want to be a polite guest.

HARRY HERE: Your comment was fine, it just mentioned the others, which I wanted removed.

  21. Mashaon 03 Nov 2008 at 5:02 pm 21

You know how Rush always says most people, even liberals, live their lives as conservatives. Grandma was obviously a good example. Here’s someone who rose to the occasion and took care of the family when the times got tough instead of sitting around whining. G-d rest her soul.

  22. David123456on 03 Nov 2008 at 5:23 pm 22

Brings a tear to the eye.

  23. David123456on 03 Nov 2008 at 5:34 pm 23

Who am I trying to kid. I don’t feel anymore sad about Obambi’s grandma than any other anonymous person who died today. Why should I?

  24. Kiton 03 Nov 2008 at 5:59 pm 24

Though I think Obama is a left-wing wacko who shouldn’t be anywhere near the Oval Office . . .

My prayers and sympathies are with him and his family as they go through this terrible loss.

  25. mjkon 03 Nov 2008 at 6:10 pm 25

Rest in Peace, ma’am. It’s a shame she isn’t around for tomorrow and Obama possibly being elected President.

What an amazing day that would have been for her.

My sympathies with Barack Obama and his family.

  26. Rusty Jameson 03 Nov 2008 at 6:56 pm 26

I was gonna mention this in the comment section.

  27. Avery Bullardon 03 Nov 2008 at 7:01 pm 27

Sorry DH. I forgot the American sense of humour is quite puritanical.

  28. Rusty Jameson 03 Nov 2008 at 7:01 pm 28

@ “I don’t feel anymore sad about Obambi’s grandma than any other anonymous person who died today.”

Neither do I. But I think the point is that issues like this put a human face on these political issues and remind us that our political differences come in second to our shared humanity and that our passions should stop short of hatred.
On the eve of political warfare (metaphoric of course) John Nolte’s write up was a civil and compassionate gesture.

  29. Moon 03 Nov 2008 at 7:01 pm 29

This was very sad to hear.

But can we PLEASE stop acting as though this man winning tomorrow is a foregone conclusion?!

  30. The Almighty Turtleon 04 Nov 2008 at 1:48 am 30

Terrible. This does nothing to alter my views or my stand come the ‘morrow, but I could not wish this own very many people, and a peaceful domestic threat like Obama certainly is not one of those very few.

In Pace Requiscat. At the very least he had a chance to see her again before she passed on.

May she be in a better place.

And BTW DH, the scummy comments are not only on here. Take a look at Hot Air’s post, where roughly 1/4-1/3 of the comments are scummy conspiracy theories about how Obama didn’t care, he only went to Hawaii to seal his records, how she died previously and they are mentioning it now just to get a last-minute sympathy vote blah blah blah blah blah.

Now, I cannot honestly say I am 100% convinced, because deep in the dark corners of my mind, the diamond- hard pessimistic cynic in me cannot completely dismiss these theories as being COMPLETELY crackpot.

However, in America, one is innocent until proven guilty. And if we will grudgingly extend it to the likes of OJ Simpson, Mumia, the Branch-Dravidians, the other assorted swine, Obama certainly deserves it. That, coupled with the fact that these claims are likely from the same guys who were in the woods stockpiling ammo during the Clinton Admin thinking (with virtually no proof) that a coming tyranny was approaching, leads me to largely discard them.

And that is why I offer my sincere condolences to Obama and his family. They could not have truly asked for this. And for that, my sympathy, if not my vote, is with them.

  31. Mashaon 04 Nov 2008 at 5:23 am 31

I do wish she would have taught him to love this country a little more.

  32. Dirty Harry's Momon 04 Nov 2008 at 6:15 am 32

It is too bad many of your followers are not as gracious and genuine as you are. This is extremely sad because she missed by one day seeing her grandson reach the pinnacle of possibilities in this country. It will be a bittersweet victory for Obama. And I hope it shows every one of us the importance of one day.

  33. Cloudbusteron 04 Nov 2008 at 7:38 am 33

Maybe if she hadn’t raised her daughter to be a shiftless, irresponsible, child-abandoning hippy with an attraction to politically-radical foreign losers, we wouldn’t be in this mess.

  34. Mashaon 04 Nov 2008 at 9:00 am 34

Hey at least she lived up to her obligations. Can’t blame her too much anyway. Blame the indoctrination machine that is Harvard.
