Has Time magazine named Obama their man of the year yet? 2009 is only two days old but hasn’t he done enough this year to win it? Or is the media waiting for more pictures of him topless?
Ok, I am a little slow on this, but did anyone else HATE Wall-E?? I was prepared to have an environmentalist undertone, but I was shocked at how dark it was. I was depressed after watching it. My deep-thinking 10 year old definitely has my DNA, because she cried throught the whole thing and asked if she “had” to watch it. She said it seemed empty, sad, and “Godless”. So are we the only ones who are nutz? Help me out here. (PS I DID make her watch it to the end, hoping there would be a happy ending. At least she slept that night.)
To Dirty Harry, thank you for a year of funny, smart writing that has become one of the highlights of my day — I wish you much success with Big Hollywood!
Finally saw Valkyrie this afternoon. I said I was going to watch it New Year’s Eve, but didn’t get the chance then. And after having watched Valkyrie, I’m compelled to say that all the hoopla about Tom Cruise the past couple of years has been largely unwarranted and ridiculous.
Ever since he jumped up and down on Oprah’s couch, it seems like most everybody has been giving him a hard time, and for the most part, there’s no reason for it. The couch incident, his bout with Matt Lauer, the stuff about his family, the episode with the creators of South Park (no pun intended), the problems with Paramount/Viacom over Mission: Impossible III and more recently, the big deal over his latest film, Valkyrie; nothing but ridiculous hoopla. The only aspects of this hoopla that hold any water (if at all) would be about Cruise & Scientology and the debacle over Lions For Lambs.
As for Scientology, it depends entirely on what one thinks of the Church of Scientology. Personally, I regard Scientology as a cult and tend to be wary of it whenever its celebrity members talk about it. There’s no denying it; Cruise is an avid disciple of Scientology, but I repeat, it depends entirely on what you think of Scientology and whether or not that will be a factor in deciding to watch any of his films.
As for Lions For Lambs, there’s no way around it. Cruise no doubt thought this would be a good first project to tackle as head of United Artists, and he’s been paying for it since in more ways than one. Which now leads me to Valkyrie itself.
Almost from the time it was announced this film was to be made, it seemed like people were trying to turn it into a story about Tom Cruise’s next debacle which was reinforced with word about the rising costs of the film. Then the focus was shifted to Cruise’s acting ability in the film. He received criticism for his lack of a German accent, he wasn’t the right man to portray Von Stauffenberg and so on.
Tom Cruise is, in my opinion, one of a handful of good actors working today; not versatile like Olivier or Laughton or Kenneth Branagh or Christian Bale, but still good. And in Valkyrie (an overall very good film), Cruise gave a good performance and was backed up by one of the strongest supporting casts seen this past year in a film (and there was no need for him to speak with a German accent thanks to the beginning of the film).
To me, all the talk about Cruise is just that; talk, and valueless talk at that. That’s all I have to say on the subject. I hope I haven’t been blowing hot air here.
That line blew me away. The problem is, the are NOT melting in. But Leftists are intellectuals. All they have are theories and in THEORY everyone will blend in.
Saw “Gran Torino” today….wow. Very disappointing. Clint is charmingly crusty, but really a parody of himself, and I just couldn’t get past the woefully inexperienced young Hmong actors. I applaud Clint’s trying to get the real deal to play the parts, but their wooden line readings, blank stares and terrible emoting kept bringing the film screeching to a halt for me. The young priest was good, and I enjoyed the thematic arc Clint was going for but definitely one of his weaker efforts. Nothing reminds you of how hard good acting is as seeing it done so badly, and Clint’s shoulders are perhaps a bit too weathered to carry the entire film on his acting shoulders alone. I enjoyed The Wrestler, even with its painful cliches, much more, and Mickey Rourke’s magnificent wreck of a human stayed with me for days. Good comments on Cruise, Morgan, and re: German accents: I saw clips of Defiance, where Daniel Craig and Liev Schriver seem to be doing accents–very glaring. Singer/Cruise made the right call in Valkyrie

I posted a response before, but it was spammed away:
“It’s a melting pot. You bring your culture over here with you. It all blends in.”
The only thing melting is the pot.
Luke Hon 02 Jan 2009 at 11:39 am 9Pious Mom,
I didn’t hate Wall-E but I was still pretty disappointed. Up until Wall-E all of the Pixar films that I’ve seen have been really good.
Wall-E, while the animation was first rate, at best didn’t live up to it’s predecessors.

Emilyon 02 Jan 2009 at 3:06 pm 12I need to watch this. It’s so sad about Donald Westlake, especially since the year just stared. And I just heard that John Travolta’s son died. Sigh…

So heavy handed for a trailer.
