Breitbart on Big Hollywood
Posted by Dirty Harry on Saturday, January 5th, 2008
On Tuesday, I launch Big Hollywood (bighollywood.breitbart .com), a big group blog that will feature hundreds of the big minds from the fields of politics, journalism, entertainment and culture.
Big Hollywood is not a “celebrity” gabfest or a gossip outpost - it is a continuous politics and culture posting board for those who think something has gone drastically wrong and that Hollywood should return to its patriotic roots.
Big Hollywood’s modest objective: to change the entertainment industry. To make Hollywood something we can believe in - again. In order to give millions of Americans hope.
Until conservatives, libertarians and Republicans - who will be the lion’s share of Big Hollywood’s contributors - recognize that (pop) culture is the big prize and that politics is secondary, there will be no victory in this important battle.
Hollywood is no longer an American industry. And it took a prolonged war in which the studios and most of the stars didn’t show up to fight for America to draw attention to this hard truth.
American corporations, the FBI, the CIA and elected U.S. officials are the bad guys in flicks these days. Radical Islamists are seldom vilified while the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines are smeared too often.
Tomorrow you all get your first look-see.

Nicol Don 05 Jan 2009 at 7:58 am 2Looking forward to being a regular reader.
Pop Culture is the prize and politics is not…funny how both the left and right do not realize that.
That’s why the left always thinks they are oppressed when a conservative politician wins.
Thanks for your days here Harry/John. They were well spent.

Johnny Ed's Babyon 05 Jan 2009 at 8:09 am 4I like the fact that Breitbart is thinking big. Too often it’s easy to keep expectations low so that failure doesn’t look so bad.
But changing the entertainment industry is a big goal that is worth a shot. Let’s go and have some fun.
Harry R. Wilkenson 05 Jan 2009 at 8:12 am 5I am drawing now my movie friends’ attention to your website…
Jack Marinoon 05 Jan 2009 at 8:13 am 6IF you don’t think and act on big ideas, you will never be big. Small thinkers and dreams end up with small successes. That is fine for them, but if one is going to go through this splendid misery called Hollywood, then go as big as you can dream them, because if it hits you will received what you went after.
Good luck Harry and Andrew with this new venture… only great things will come of this for our side.

For forty years I have watched that, the cold war movies portrayed America and it’s agencies and military as the real force of evil on our planet.
About all that 9/11 changed was to replace the mildly sympathetic communists with mildly sympathetic Muslims.
Now, just as with the KGB, the terrorists arm of Islam is treated as an almost necessary defense against America and it is often shown as being less depraved than our own CIA and our GIs.
Kiton 05 Jan 2009 at 8:27 am 8Breitbart is right.
The question is, will conservatives rally behind him.
Wilson the Volleyballon 05 Jan 2009 at 8:28 am 9Culture is the prize. Politics is second.
How long will it take for Conservatives to recognize this?????

ScottDSon 05 Jan 2009 at 9:06 am 13I’m an independent but I look forward to checking out the new place.
Please keep the irreverence and the humor and some of the other features (like the DVD library). What I’d rather not see are articles by politicians whining about how there’s too much sex and violence on TV.
A couple ideas: in addition to a(n updated) DVD library, how about a library of books on filmmaking, star/director biographies, scripts, etc.
Some of the people checking out the new site might not be big movie fans so maybe a glossary or “film 101″ section… I don’t know, just thinking out loud.
And after yesterday, a “Hooking up your home theater” article might be necessary.
Kiton 05 Jan 2009 at 9:11 am 14I second ScottDS.
Bluejadeon 05 Jan 2009 at 9:19 am 15I’m so pleased that there are folks on the left that recognize the importance of culture. For too long, conservatives thought that because they were winning elections, they were winning the country. But the left had embarked on its long march through the institutions, with the result that media, education, academia and entertainment, formerly areas that were fairly diverse if somewhat lib-leaning, are now all far-left strongholds. But I don’t think you, DH, or Andrew Breitbart, should make the mistake of thinking Hollywood was all patriot back in the day. The Hollywood left, like the Left everywhere, only started fighting the Nazis when Stalin gave them permission.
PerfectTommyon 05 Jan 2009 at 10:14 am 16Bluejade, There were a lot of leftists in the Old Hollywood, but conservatives were well represented. Reagan opposed the communists as the head of the Screen Actors guild. Wayne opposed the anti war left as a prominent star who was able to optain funds to make a promilitary film as the war in Vietnam raged. Stewart, Heston, Hope and others proudly acknowledged their conservatism.
So, yes, back in the day there were real patriots. (And many Democrats back then were real patriots as well, such as Ronald Reagan.) So the hope to take back Hollywood, at least partially, is a noble and realistic goal.

”
I couldn’t agree more
pandaxon 05 Jan 2009 at 11:06 am 18Looking forward to the new site. This last election was a wake up call for conservatives. We all knew the media was liberal and made jokes about but we didn’t realize the damage it could do until we saw it put all it’s resources to get Obama in office.
Growltigeron 05 Jan 2009 at 11:51 am 19Hollywood has been “red” since the at least the thirties. Read “Red Star Over Hollywood” for an informative book on the Leftist leanings of the film industry. Some of it is pure stupidity — bozos like Affleck, Damon, Aniston, Clooney et al don’t have a clue about existence under true communism. They do worship Europe and Europeans, and believe that European Socialism will cure most of America’s ills. (I think they’ll be hugely surprised if they get their wish, and find out just what a chunk their beloved socialism takes out of their inflated incomes). I think they think we can have socialism without their having to contribute.
Islamic radicals would make such wonderful villains — they’re as bad as Nazis — one can only believe the reason Hollywood doesn’t use them as villains is pure, unadulterated cowardice. They’re dumb but not so dumb as not to know what happened to Theo Van Gogh, Salman Rushdie and the Danish cartoonists.

Amen, brother.
If we can just get the fat cats at Heritage, AEI, Horowitz Freedom Center, et al to understand this & we might get somewhere.
If anyone wants to know why the Senate will have Stuart Smalley occupying an office, all they need to do is look at the Centers of Influence, Hollywood & New York, and the lies and crap they peddle.

Well, I wrote two fictional spoofs of Hollywood in 1999-2001 screaming this very thing from the top of my lungs, and no one either believed it or cared.
Staggering how utterly foolish Republicans have been with respect to the power of culture. I mean, unbelievable. Earth-shatteringly unvelievable.
Bluejadeon 05 Jan 2009 at 2:05 pm 25“I think they think we can have socialism without their having to contribute. ”
Growltiger — they would be correct. They would be members of the nomenklatura, and none of the rules would apply to them.
Johnon 05 Jan 2009 at 2:14 pm 26Remember, you never get a second chance to make a first impression, and the website will be the subject of ridicule from the left upon its debut (50-50 on whether the critiques have already been written). So make sure the rollout, both in content and operations, goes smoothly on Tuesday.
Mavison 05 Jan 2009 at 2:35 pm 27I just love that Andrew Breitbart. I always look forward to his column. I am really looking forward to the new website, also. I hope it makes an impact. I’ll be checking it out daily and telling friends. Thanks for all your work!
Dirty Harry's Momon 05 Jan 2009 at 2:40 pm 28I have certainly enjoyed all of your work, John, and have been so delighted to be part of this blog. Your readers, even those with ideas different than yours, are top notch. Here’s to meeting all of you again at bighollywood! And, as your mom, I can’t help saying how proud I am of you. Love you!

Conservativeon 05 Jan 2009 at 3:58 pm 31My only question to John or others involved with the inauguration of Big Hollywood is why is Steve Mason a contributor?
Steve Mason has trumpeted his left wing credentials (he’s a Bush hating Democrat) more than once on ESPN radio here in L.A.
Maybe he’s changed, I don’t know, could someone help me out here?
kinlawon 05 Jan 2009 at 4:03 pm 32Conservative:
All I know is that when his regular partner (a conservative) was out and the fill-in was a lefty they engaged in rather childish humor at the president’s expense.
Typical lefty behavior.
Don’t hold your breath waiting for him to change any time soon.

Kinlaw-
That’s my point, and thanks for providing another example of this guys smarmy leftism, why is this clown a contributor to a center-right website like Big Hollywood?
John, could you help us here?
Thanks
Funeral Guyon 05 Jan 2009 at 4:40 pm 34I’ll be at the new site first thing tomorrow. I sure will miss Dirty Harry’s Place though. It felt like a very comfortable club in here.
Joe Weldonon 05 Jan 2009 at 5:47 pm 35“(pop) culture is the big prize…politics is secondary”
Wait a minute, people…
A very basic phrase used in screenwriting is ‘art over structure’ (also sometimes called ‘poetry over math’) - meaning any good movie, no matter how artsy or visually spectacular, should follow some basic rules, plot points, character arcs, etc., in order to successfully deliver the movie’s message (assuming it has one).
I previously posted that the power of movies can make anything look cool, smart, exciting, authentic, bold, honorable and what have you.
We must aim to make the conservative viewpoint all of the above, and more.
And we must not take NO for an answer.
I (humbly) think a better version would be to say ‘Pop culture is the Big Prize…and to attain dominance of it, we must use movies, blogs, grassroots activism, and anything else, as the MEANS, or delivery system to promote the conservative worldview - in order for conservatism to win elections, which allow us to live the way we want.’
Just like the Left did by successfully implementing their worldview through the MSM and academia.
But what we have to say, and what movies we make and get made, will not have the impact we want if they don’t distinctly convey how the conservative way is superior.
We must demonstrate WHY we are conservative, and how important it is. Unapologetically.
Because when we lose ‘the Big Prize’ - i.e. public opinion - we lose elections.
Politics and elections may be secondary - but they are absolutely INVALUABLE to living as men and women who like to express their opinions, live their lives in freedom, and have a say, and an impact in the shaping of their culture.
See ya tomorrow, Harry.
Kiton 05 Jan 2009 at 5:59 pm 36I’m hoping for change, Harry.
winstonwolf33on 06 Jan 2009 at 3:39 am 37Bit of advice to Andrew Breitbart: LOSE THE MULLET!
How are conservatives in Hollywood supposed to be taken seriously when one of their leaders is sporting one of the most un-serious hair styles around? Who’s his stylist? James Traficant?
